Sapphire HD5870 Toxic VRM question

Postby Lwerewolf » Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:25 am

Looking to replace my current VGA (512mb sapphire 4870 reference model) with a 5870 because my old one now restarts in halo:CE, DA:O and even the win7 hardware rating test when the VDDC current hits 54.9 amps (about half a year ago I ran through this HaloCE SPV2 level (pillar of autumn beta) without ANY problems, the whole PC has been cleaned with an air compressor, see this thread for more info). My question is whether the toxic 5870 does the same thing as it appears to have a custom PCB design but I can't find any info on the net about its VRMs besides this. As for whether this problem exists in the stock 5870s - see this and this (it's almost at the end of the article). I'm willing to drop the toxic for something like an XFX if it proves more stable (stability is key for me in furmark/OCCT, I'll most probably be running an openCL renderer and I guess this can easily push the card's limits).

i got the vapor x hd5770.. and as far as i know.. those amperage issues are solved with the 5000 series cards.. AND that the vapor-x & toxic versions of sapphire use better chokes etc... (better parts = less chance for issues)

no problems here at all, but i'd tripple check the PSU before blaming it on the card (eg, try it with another/more powerfull psu before knowing 100%)
